Summary
What happened, as the record shows.
Stella Anastasia Evon, 17, a Yup'ik girl, lived with her grandmother in Bethel, Alaska. On the night of September 28, 1996, she went to a party with friends and stayed until after 3 a.m. When she got home she found the door locked and could not wake her grandmother. The home sat across from the police station, so she walked over for help; an officer could not wake the grandmother either and drove Stella about two and a half miles to her older sister's apartment at the Bethel Native Corporation complex, arriving about 4:30 a.m. Between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. she left her sister's apartment on foot to walk back; her sister watched her walk down the street. She has never been seen or heard from since. She is classified as endangered missing under suspicious circumstances, is not considered a runaway, and, per reporting, no known leads have ever surfaced. Her case remains unsolved. Sources disagree on the exact date; the late-September timeline here is the best-supported account.
