Summary
What happened, as the record shows.
Kristen Modafferi, 18, an NC State sophomore, vanished on June 23, 1997 after finishing her coffee-shop shift at the Crocker Galleria in San Francisco. Bloodhounds traced her scent onto a bus and to Land's End, where the trail went cold. No body was ever found, no arrests were ever made, and no suspect was ever charged; the FBI cleared her housemates and closed its side. A 2000 federal law funding missing-adult searches, Kristen's Law, was named for her. As of 2025 the case remained unsolved. The investigating agency is not clearly established in public coverage.
