Kanika Powell, 28, an Army veteran and lab employee with top-secret clearance, was ambushed and shot multiple times in her apartment hallway at Deerfield Run Apartments in Laurel, Maryland on August 28, 2008; she died the next day. In the five days before, three different men knocked on her door, one claiming to be an FBI agent and two claiming to be delivery drivers, each asking for her by name; she refused them all. Her wallet and valuables were untouched. No motive was ever established and no arrests were ever made; the Prince George's County Police Department tip line remains the only open avenue.
