Davina Buff Jones, 33, an on-duty police officer, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the back of the head near Old Baldy Lighthouse on Bald Head Island, North Carolina, on October 22, 1999, after radioing that she was with three unidentified individuals. On December 9, 1999, the Brunswick County District Attorney ruled the death a suicide. In 2005 the North Carolina Industrial Commission, in a death-benefits proceeding rather than a criminal finding, found it could not conclude suicide and found she was killed in the line of duty. In 2011 the newly elected District Attorney announced a reexamination, including an outside review by retired FBI agents who did not reach consensus. On December 17, 2013, the District Attorney changed the classification from suicide to undetermined. No arrest has been reported and no suspect has been named.
