Summary

What happened, as the record shows.

Charles Alvin "Chuck" Porter Jr., 39, a North Carolina Department of Transportation custodian, was called in to work Sunday morning, September 26, 1993, at the I-85 rest stop near mile marker 10 south of Shelby. He was found tied up in the rest-stop utility room with a gunshot wound to the chest. Witnesses reported seeing two young men fleeing in a dark Volkswagen toward I-85 southbound; composite sketches were circulated but produced no viable leads. Robbery is described as the apparent motive, though authorities have not said whether anything was taken. A later Sheriff's Office investigator said there was nothing new in the case and that most leads had been exhausted. No arrests have been made.
