Summary
What happened, as the record shows.
Cheryl Ann Kenney, 30, a married mother of two, worked as a clerk at the Quality Convenience Store on Business 71 Highway in Nevada, Missouri. On the evening of February 27, 1991, a slow night, she closed early: her time card shows she clocked out at 10:00 p.m. and set the store alarm at 10:17 p.m. She never arrived home, and her white Chevrolet was found abandoned in the store parking lot. Two witnesses reported hearing a woman scream around the time she would have walked to her car, but they did not come forward until days later, after reading about the disappearance. The store janitor, who left minutes before closing, said an unidentified male customer was inside; he was never identified. Authorities first considered that she may have left voluntarily, as her mother had recently died, but she carried only about $6, and it would have been out of character for her to abandon her husband, two children, and ill father. Investigators noted similarities to two other 1991 Missouri cases but found no hard evidence linking them. In 2011 the Nevada police chief announced a cold-case review with a task force drawn from the Nevada Police Department, Vernon County Sheriff's Office, and Missouri State Highway Patrol; no resolution was reported. No one has been charged.
